Speaking Of Printmaking

Like many people doing important work – it seems that his chosen medium came to him, rather than him seeking it out.

In indigenous ways of knowing, it is understood that each living being has a particular role to play. Every being is endowed with certain gifts, its own intelligence, its own spirit, its own story. Our stories tell us that the Creator gave these to us, as original instructions. The foundation of education is to discover that gift within us and learn to use it well.

Scarlet Imprint shared this wonderful mini-documentary about wood block screen print artist Travis Lawrence on Twitter the other day.

I’m really glad they did. His art and work has a lot of depth. Like many people doing important work – it seems that his chosen medium came to him, rather than him seeking it out. He has been hugely influenced by symbolism and the work of Jung. Check out his work here.

A few years ago I went to see an exhibition of Art Nouveau ‘influencer’ Aubrey Beardsley’s (1872 – 1898) woodcuts at Sotheran’s in London. On reflection looking though the photos today so I could put a couple online below. I now WISH I’d bought one. Ah well.

I always associate print making with zines for some reason. Perhaps its because my first exposure to that art form was as a young punk/teenager. Well before we’d been allowed to use the linocut materials at school. Speaking of printmaking. For years I had the intention of going along to one of the Print Collective workshops at DIY Space for London. Hopefully DIYSFL will find a new HQ soon and that will become an opportunity again.

I enjoyed the last night of the summer fireworks by myself as Eve was out last weekend.

Reading

I finished Joanne Mcneil’s : Lurking: How a Person Became a User this week. The book is Fan-tas-tic. I dropped her a DM as soon as I finished the book to say “The structure and approach to each topic is exactly what’s needed at this point I the timeline”. My podcast a few weeks ago on MSN was partly inspired by the book, and the AEWCH episode she did with Conner Habib.

Joanne has written a sort of ‘internet memoir’ that tracks her experiences on various platforms after she plugged in. AOL chatrooms, Friendster, Myspace, the iPhone, Twitter, Facebook etc. Interweaving importan research and commentary on the questions of: searching, safety, privacy, identity, community, anonymity, and visibility.

This book is a must read in 2020. It covers a critical history about the rise of the internet we got, with source material from people who were there – at the time. Material that is most often overlooked by the mainstream tech press that largely spent the 2010’s fawning over the tech giants, rather than taking them to task.

Music

Oklou has a new 6 track EP ‘Galore’ out at the end of August. I always enjoy more Oklou. The first single from the record is ‘unearth me’.
